Biography

Henri Gabriel Salvador, 18 July 1917, Cayenne, French Guiana, d. 13 February 2008, Paris, France. Raised in France where he was influenced by records of Django Reinhardt, Salvador taught himself guitar. He gained a reputation in the early 30s and was heard by Reinhardt who subsequently hired him. He also worked with visiting Americans, notably Eddie South. In the early 40s, Salvador played in the bands of Bernard Hilda and Ray Ventura. With Ventura he toured South America, recording in Montevideo, Uruguay, and he also recorded outside the band in Argentina and Brazil, with Franco-Brazilian bands that included Louis Vola, Pierre Allier and others.

At the end of World War II, Salvador returned to France where, in 1946, he formed his own band and also did stage work, appearing in the operetta, Le Chevalier Bayard (1947), starring Ludmilla Tchérina and Yves Montand. From the end of the 40s into the mid-50s he was active in Paris. In 1956...
