Biography
22 February 1947, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Mason began playing the drums when he was four years old. He studied at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston and later gained a degree in education at New England Conservatory. He worked with pianists Erroll Garner, George Shearing and Jan Hammer before moving to Los Angeles in 1971, where he worked as a studio musician covering music such as jazz, pop, rock and orchestral. He played with a wide range of band leaders and musicians, including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Gunther Schuller, Donald Byrd, Gerry Mulligan, Grover Washington, George Benson and Lee Ritenour. His clear, strong rhythm playing was perfect for Herbie Hancocks Headhunters in 1973, which also highlighted several of Masons expert arrangements. Mason also recorded several albums as leader for Arista Records. In the 90s he became drummer of the highly successful fusion group Fourplay.
