Biography

Based in Geneva, New York, USA, this hip-hop quartet is unusual in that all the members play instruments and eschew the use of samples and programmed beats. High school friends Travis ‘Schleprok’ McCoy (5 August 1981, New York, USA; vocals), Matt McGinley (drums), Milo Bonacci (guitar) and Ryan Geise (bass) first began making music together under the Gym Class Heroes moniker in 1997. The self-released Hed Candy and Greasy Kid Stuff EPs were sold at local gigs and paved the way for the quartet’s album debut, … For The Kids, which was released in early 2002 via the group’s website. Lyrics about relationships and trying to make it in the music business did not chime with the more earthy concerns of contemporary rap, and it was hardly surprising when the group attracted the attention of the indie rock label Fueled By Ramen.
