Biography

UK neo-folk act Gravenhurst is the creation of the Bristol-based musician and songwriter Nick Talbot. Adopting the name of a song on US alt rock band Pullman’s Turnstyles And Junkpiles, Talbot’s variation on folk music notably takes in influences such as Hüsker Dü and My Bloody Valentine. Talbot has said his voice is so weak he has to ‘coo’ like the latter band’s Bilinda Butcher. Talbot moved to Bristol in 1990, apparently drawn to the town after hearing records by Flying Saucer Attack and Third Eye Foundation. He played with the cult Bristol band Assembly Communications before founding the Silent Age Records label. Silent Age released Gravenhurst’s 2002 debut Internal Travels as well as works by Mole Harness and War Against Sleep, before Gravenhurst’s second album Flashlight Seasons was (perhaps unexpectedly) licensed by electronica label Warp Records.
