Formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, the Gigolo Aunts originally comprised Dave Gibbs (vocals/rhythm guitar), brothers Phil (lead guitar) and Steve Hurley (bass), and Paul Brouwer (drums), who had played together since 1981, initially as a band entitled Sniper. This name was soon jettisoned for Marauder, then Rosetta Stone (since they did not know a band of the same name already existed). When they finally became the Gigolo Aunts (from a Syd Barrett song), there was little immediate fanfare, despite a developing ability to write inviting guitar pop songs in the tradition of Big Star. In fact the band remained practically unknown until Gibbs journeyed to the UK in 1992 to play guest guitar with Velvet Crush, where he met Creation Records’ boss Alan McGee and swapped anecdotes with the similarly inclined Teenage FancluThe Gigolo Aunts signed to Fire Records in the UK shortly thereafter.
