George Paul Robert, 15 September 1960, Geneva, Switzerland. As a child Robert learned to play piano, adding clarinet when he was aged 10. In his mid-teens he switched to alto saxophone, and later added the soprano to his instrumental arsenal. At the start of the 80s, he was a student at the Berklee College Of Music and then became a New York resident which is where he formed his own label, GPR Records, although he also recorded for other labels. Through the late 80s and into the 90s, Robert worked with several noted musicians, in particular enjoying fruitful relationships with Tom Harrell and Dado Moroni. Although, he has a distinctive sound and style, especially when playing alto, Robert has been likened to Phil Woods and there are certainly similarities, notably in his richly emotional approach to ballads and the burnished molten sound he creates.
