Biography
26 December 1947, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Porter took up guitar, studying classical form, but a chance hearing of bass player Benjamin Popi Francis turned him towards rock and a change of instrument. In the 60s he worked with musicians such as Johnny Adams, Irving Bannister, Eddie Bo, Lee Dorsey, Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint, before joining the acclaimed funk group the Meters at the end of the decade. In tandem with his work with the Meters, from the 60s and on through subsequent decades, Porter played with rock musicians and could also be heard with artists working in many facets of contemporary pop; among these are Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne (touring internationally), Snooks Eaglin, Dr. John, Luther Guitar Junior Johnson, Earl King, Patti Labelle, Paul McCartney, John Mooney, Robert Palmer, Tommy Ridgley, Robbie Robertson and Phillip Walker.
