Biography
14 October 1953, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 11 Fewell began studying acoustic blues guitar, paying special attention to the music of old country blues artists such as Mississippi John Hurt, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Rev. Gary Davis. By 1967, he was performing professionally in the Philadelphia area with a repertoire that drew upon his transcriptions of Delta Blues guitarists and also featured his own compositions and improvised music. Following a 1972 tour of the Middle East and Pakistan, Fewell studied jazz guitar with Lenny Breau and Pat Martino, receiving a Bachelor of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from the Berklee College Of Music in Boston. Five years later, he returned to Berklee as Professor of Guitar. He formed his own jazz group in 1976 and also worked with front-rank artists such as Larry Coryell and Herbie Hancock.
