Manfred Quinn, 27 September 1931, Niederfladnitz Bei Wien, Austria. With his trademark leather jacket and sailor’s hat and his image of a ‘troubadour of wanderlust and homesickness’, Quinn is one of the most popular and versatile entertainers in post-war Germany with more than 60 million records sold. After his parents separated Quinn went as a four-year-old with his father, a businessman with Irish roots Johann Quinn, to Morgantown, West Virginia, USA. His mother, an Austrian journalist and publisher, successfully claimed custody so that he had to return to Austria in 1938. When his mother remarried he was adopted by his stepfather and his name changed to Manfred von Petz (which in 1952 he changed back to Quinn). As a young boy Quinn learnt several instruments (violin, accordion, guitar) and made friends with another fledgling musician from his home town, Erhard Hassek, with whom he later performed as Freddy And Hardy.
