Biography

20 March 1897, Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA, d. 9 November 1945, Dayton, Ohio, USA. Hutchison grew up in Logan County and first played harmonica when aged eight but inspired by bottleneck-style guitar playing he turned to that instrument. Hutchison probably used a penknife more than a bottleneck but soon began to achieve satisfactory results. He first earned a living by working either in the mines or in work connected with the coal industry. He married in 1917 and seeking a living from his music, eventually attracted the attention of OKeh Records. Between 1926 and 1929, he recorded 32 sides of which 29 were released. They included his version of ‘Railroad Bill’ and novelty numbers that featured both his guitar and harmonica playing such as ‘K.C. Blues’ and ‘C & O Excursion’.
