Biography

4 January 1954, Mount Vernon, New York, USA. Raised in Boulder, Colorado, Chadbourne took up guitar at the age of 11: ‘I was the third boy in my grade school to actually get a guitar following the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I was the first to actually learn how to play.’ The example of Jimi Hendrix led him to explore the wah-wah pedal and the fuzzbox. Dissatisfied with teenage inertia, he traded in his rock electric for a Harmony six-string acoustic and began studying bottleneck blues styles. Then came exposure to John Coltrane and Rahsaan Roland Kirk; puzzled at first, he became hooked to the whole gamut of the 60s black jazz revolution: Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, as well as discovering England’s free improviser, Derek Bailey.
