Biography

28 May 1931, Westport, Connecticut, USA, d. 2 February 2007, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. His father was noted painter of western subjects, Harold Von Schmidt (b. 1893, d. 1982), his mother, Forest Gilmore, was a musician. He too became noted as a painter and was attracted to music after hearing Lead Belly on radio. Von Schmidt served in the military in 1952-54, then went to Italy on a Fulbright scholarship to study art and later taught at Sarasota School of Art in Florida. The subjects of his paintings ranged through much of Americana, notably historical scenes, including ‘The Storming Of The Alamo’, and a series entitled Giants Of The Blues. His paintings were used on album covers, mainly of folk music, and he provided illustrations for books and also many book jacket designs, including Sid Fleischman’s Jingo Django and Richard Fariña’s Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me.
