Biography

Edward Raymond Müller, 23 June 1911, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, d. 6 April 1991, Van Nuys, California, USA. Miller began playing clarinet as a child and in his early teens played in street bands. Before he was 17 years old he was on his way to New York where he played with several bands, including that led by Julie Wintz which had the unenviable task of playing opposite Fletcher Henderson at the Roseland Ballroom. While on this engagement, Miller met Henderson’s star tenor saxophonist, Coleman Hawkins, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. By this time Miller had also taken up the tenor and in 1930, at the age of 19, joined Ben Pollack’s band where he remained until its break-up in 1934. A founder member of the co-operative group that became known as the Bob Crosby Orchestra, Miller was one of the leading soloists of the band and played an important part in its huge success.
