30 May 1960, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Having appeared in an early line-up of Duran Duran, Stephen Duffy first came to prominence in the UK under the moniker of Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy, with the release of his second single, ‘Kiss Me’, in early 1985. The track, which reached UK number 4, confirmed Duffy’s power as a weaver of engaging pop melodies. His debut album The Ups And Downs divided the critics but his formula pop was most suitable for daytime radio play. ‘Icing On The Cake’ restored Duffy to the UK Top 20, but his subsequent solo work proved less enticing. His second album Because We Love You was released under the Stephen Duffy moniker after he was forced to drop the ‘Tin Tin’ part of his name following legal action by lawyers representing the Belgian author Hergé.
