Biography
Essentially a vehicle for singer-songwriter Jackie Leven (18 June 1950, Fife, Scotland), this UK rock band was formed in 1977 and first came to the fore in 1979, riding on the coat-tails of the punk explosion, with Remember. An interesting debut, the work featured Levens wide-ranging vocal work to startling effect. The other members of the band on this release were Jo Shaw (guitar), David McIntosh (drums) and Robin Spreafico (bass). A great leap forward was made with the same years Gypsy Blood, which saw Leven, Shaw and McIntosh joined by Tony Waite (bass), Graham Preskett (violin/keyboards) and B.J. Cole (steel guitar). Despite excellent reviews the album failed to cross over into the mainstream. The adoption of an unfashionable rock style, coupled with an uneasy relationship with the music press, undoubtedly hampered progress.
