Biography
Daniel Henry Edward Thompson, 4 April 1939, Teignmouth, Devon, England. An expressive, inventive double bass player, Thompson became established in British jazz circles through his work with Tubby Hayes. In 1964 he joined Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated where he would forge an intuitive partnership with drummer Terry Cox following John Marshall’s departure. Three years later the duo formed the rhythm section in Pentangle, a folk ‘supergroup’ that featured singer Jacquie McShee and guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Thompson remained with this seminal quintet until their demise in 1972 but had forged a concurrent career as a leading session musician. He appeared on releases by Donovan, Cliff Richard (‘Congratulations’) and Rod Stewart (‘Maggie May’), but was acclaimed for peerless contributions to albums by folk singers Nick Drake and John Martyn.
