3 December 1979, New Zealand. Singer-songwriter Bedingfield caused a stir in the pre-Christmas UK singles chart of 2001 as his first release arrived seemingly from nowhere to claim the top spot. In truth the smooth garage of Gotta Get Through This had already enjoyed a swift elevation through the summer of that year, becoming a huge pirate radio and club track. Born in New Zealand but relocated to Lewisham, south London at the age of three months, Bedingfield based his breakthrough hit on his experience of unrequited love for a nightclub dancer, recording and mixing the results on just £1, 000 worth of equipment. With its catchy bass hook, Gotta Get Through This confirmed him as an emerging talent of UK garage in the wake of Craig David, and sparked a bidding frenzy among records labels that was eventually won by Polydor Records, benefiting the singer to the tune of £400, 000.
