Biography

14 December 1955, Pasadena, California, USA. Barrett first took up the trombone as a teenager, encouraged by a teacher named Ken Owen. He began playing professionally while still at high school, sitting in with a traditional band at a local restaurant. In 1977, by now at college, he visited Europe to take part in the Breda Jazz festival in Holland. Barrett continued to play in various parts of California, usually in a traditional jazz setting but with occasional excursions into the mainstream. A meeting with Howard Alden led to thoughts of a group of their own but the time was not yet right for either man. In 1983, he moved to New York City and was soon a member of the Widespread Depression Orchestra, often sitting in at clubs like Eddie Condon’s and Jimmy Ryan’s.
