Decades Active: 1990s 2000s


Leaders of the European gothic-metal scene (although one or two maverick acts such as Mortiis just outsell them), Sweden’s Crematory were formed in 1991 by Felix (Gerhard Stass; vocals), Lotte (b. Lothar Först; guitar), Harald (bass) and Markus Jüllich (drums). Their first recording, 1992’s demo tape Denial, sold over 1, 000 copies and led to a contract with the Massacre label. The debut album Transmigration followed in 1993. A keyboard player, Katrin Goger, complemented Crematory’s dark, surreal music and tours with Tiamat and My Dying Bride saw a fanbase begin to assemble. It soon became apparent that Germany was Crematory’s most ardent audience, and the band responded to this by recording a self-titled German-language album in 1996.
