Biography
10 September 1953, Hempstead, Long Island, USA. Harris emerged as a trombone player with the AACM in Chicago in the late 70s. He played for a year in the Lena Horne orchestra on Broadway and then with the Beaver Harris - Don Pullen 360 Degree Musical Experience. Having been educated at SUNY at Old Westbury (where saxophonist Pat Patrick made a great impression as a teacher) he moved to New York in 1978 and joined Sun Ras Arkestra, the band in which Patrick played, staying for two years. In 1981 he went on a world tour with pianist Abdullah Ibrahim: Australia made a particular impression on him. He met and played with Aborigine musicians and acquired a didgeridoo, which he now plays to great effect. He later played in David Murrays first octet, participating in one of the great consolidating bands of black music in the 80s. Harris' debut as a leader was Aboriginal Affairs in 1983.
