Biography
1972, Palma, Mallorca, Spain. Buikas family comes from Guinea and as a small child she heard music of that region as well as that of a neighbouring gypsy community. She also heard contemporary pop and as a result of these many influences as she developed as a singer her repertoire included soul, jazz and funk all of which were overlaid on a base of flamenco. Buika went to London to study drama but prompted in large part by attending a concert by Pat Metheny she switched to studying music. In the 90s, she performed in Ombra, which was staged by La Fura del Baus, and was also on the film soundtrack for the Spanish movie Km.O (2000). In the early 00s, Buika appeared in the USA, singing at hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also sang at a Las Vegas festival promoted by Blue Note Records where she shared a bill with Rachelle Ferrell. She has also performed in duets with Jacob Sureda.
