Chris Wood

Decades: 1990s 2000s


England. An influential figure on the traditional English dance music scene in the latter part of the twentieth century, Wood has worked extensively in a solo capacity and with leading folk and classical musicians. Proficient on the fiddle, viola, bass and guitar, and an underrated vocalist and songwriter, he began his recording career at the start of the 80s as a member of the Oyster Ceilidh Band (later Oysterband), appearing on 1980’s Jack’s Alive. He moved on to collaborations with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and also undertook a sponsored trip to Canada to study the music of Quebec. On his return he recorded his solo debut, Ever Simpler, and set up his own R.U.F. label (not to be confused with the German blues label of the same name).

At the start of the 90s, Wood forged a productive partnership with accordion/melodeon player Andy Cutting, with the duo releasing a string of acclaimed albums on R.U.F....
