Biography

12 January 1951, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, d. 27 December 1978, Memphis, Tennessee. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bell spent his formative years in local bands, before working as an engineer at Memphis’ Ardent Studios. Here he recorded several original compositions for a projected album with the short-lived Rock City that attracted owner John Fry, who operated a concurrent record label. Inspired by their interest, in 1971 Bell formed the critically acclaimed Big Star with ex-Rock City drummer Jody Stephens, bass player Andy Hummel and former Box Tops singer, Alex Chilton. The following year’s #1 Record exposed his love of Beatles -styled melodies, but Bell quit the band the following year, disillusioned with Ardent’s distribution agreement with the ailing Stax Records label. Several tracks he had been working on with Chilton later surfaced on Big Star’s second album, Radio City.
