Biography

22 March 1911, Stokes County, North Carolina, USA, d. 18 June 1989. Campbell worked on his father’s tobacco farm until he was 21, by which time he had learned to play acoustic steel guitar and tenor banjo, and had appeared on local radio. After meeting Dick Hartman and Harry Blair of the Tennessee Ramblers in Pittsburgh, he became a member of the band. He played tenor banjo or acoustic steel guitar with them on numerous radio stations and made recordings with them on Bluebird under several names, such as Dick Hartman’s Tennessee Ramblers, Hartman’s Heartbreakers and the Washboard Wonders. Hartman left the band in 1937, but Campbell remained, and in 1945, by this time specializing in the electric steel guitar, he became the band’s leader. He settled in Charlotte, North Carolina, and played regularly on WBT. During the 40s and 50s, he made recordings for RCA Victor Records and MGM Records, becoming noted for his self-penned steel guitar...
