Caural is the creation of Zachary Ian Mastoon (19 December 1977, Chicago, Illinois, USA), who simultaneously fuses seemingly antithetical sounds and genres to create the most intriguing of musics. While the project is rooted in hip-hop and hip-hop culture, it also draws on post-rock, musique concrète, electronica, esoterica, abstract soundscapes, lounge muzak and jazz. The musician explicitly admits the influence of the soundtrack to the early hip-hop classic Beat Street, Thomas Dolby, and the childhood recordings he made on his Fisher Price cassette recorder at the age of seven.
