Antônio Carlos Santos de Freitas, 1962, Cadeal Pequeno, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. By the early 90s, Brazil was anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new artist who could emulate the legends of the past, somebody able to make a resonant artistic statement on the level of Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil or Caetano Veloso. Those prayers were largely answered by the appearance of Carlinhos Brown, known first through his work with the group Timbalada, and then with two extraordinary solo albums. Carlinhos grew up in an area of the Brotas neighbourhood known as Candeal, where at an early age he began studying percussion and taking in all kinds of music. He took his stage name after being spotted on the dancefloor and compared to James Brown. By his mid-twenties, Brown had already accomplished feats most musicians can only dream about: touring with João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Djavan and others; recording with legends such as Luiz Caldas, Maria Bethânia...
