Biography

1888, Lexington, Missouri, USA, d. 1974, USA. Few composers can have had such an impact on the development of western civilisation in the twentieth century as Carl Stalling. As house orchestra leader for Warner Brothers, Stalling was responsible for the music to the Looney Toons and Merrie Melodies cartoons that developed from the 30s onwards and continue to proliferate on worldwide television schedules to this day. The soundtracks to the adventures of characters such as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were an essential ingredient of their success, requiring a constant flow of piano crescendos, nursery rhymes, classical, jazz and pop themes and sound affects to accompany the fast-paced narratives. His munificent contribution was celebrated in 1990 when Warner Brothers Records released a collection of his work, the selections drawn from one of the most unusual and distinctive repertoires in modern popular music. A second instalment followed in 1995.
