Biography
28 February 1957, Quinter, Kansas, USA. It was Barretts tenor voice and attractive stage presence that first invited attention in a 1980 Broadway revival of West Side Story in which he took the role of Diesel. His next important Broadway role came in Dance A Little Closer, by Alan Jay Lerner and Charles Strouse. This 1983 musical was unsuccessful but it was a theatrical milestone of sorts in that Barrett, in the role of airline steward Charles Castleton, sang the first openly gay love song heard in a Broadway musical: Why Cant The World Go And Leave Us Alone. On the heels of this, Barrett was cast in a continuing dramatic role in a 1983/4 season television soap, All My Children. Towards the end of the 80s, he was in the original cast of Closer Than Ever, an off-Broadway revue by Richard Maltby and David Shire.
