Mary Jo Kath/Katt, 27 October 1924, Bloomington, Illinois, USA. The exact location of her birth has variously been given as Towanda, Lawndale and Bloomington. Although there seems little known about her, she was a popular artist on KMBC Kansas City but her break came when she was signed to WLW radio (and WLW-TV) Cincinnati, where she featured on the Midwestern Hayride for over 20 years. She performed as Sally Carson and as Bonnie Lou. She recorded for King Records, registering Top 10 US country chart hits in 1953 including ‘Seven Lonely Days’ and ‘Tennessee Wig Walk’ and in 1955, a USA Top 20 pop hit with ‘Daddy-O’, which featured clarinet and accordion and was based around a new teenage phrase. She later recorded some rock ‘n’ roll numbers, before disappearing from the music scene in the mid-70s.
