Biography

Blonde On Blonde - Ralph Denver (guitar, vocals), Gareth Johnson (guitar), Richard Hopkins (bass, keyboards) and Les Hicks (drums) - came to prominence on BBC Television’s short-lived programme How Late It Is. Their debut single, ‘All Day, All Night/Country Life’ (1969), showed considerable promise, but Contrasts was a comparative disappointment, demonstrating little of the group’s initial imagination. Blonde On Blonde appeared at the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival, after which Denver and Hopkins left the line-up. Dave Thomas (guitar, vocals) and Richard John (bass) joined for Rebirth, on which the group pursued a musical direction reminiscent of the Moody Blues. They added a mellotron player, known only as Kip, for Reflections On A Life, which also featured new bass player Graham Davies in place of John. This somewhat pretentious selection was not a success and Blonde On Blonde broke up soon afterwards.
