During the 50s Pearl began playing guitar and was drawn to the blues owing to many opportunities he had to hear first hand masters such as Albert Collins, Lightnin Hopkins, Freddie King, Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi Fred MacDowell and Big Mama Thornton. Mostly this came about through these artists appearing at the Ash Grove, a blues club that was operated by Pearls brother, Ed. Not only did Pearl hear these artists, in some instances he took lessons from them, developing striking technical skills and building extensive knowledge of the idiom.
