Biography

This Spanish girl duo had a UK number 1 in 1977 with the disco-orientated ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’. Sung by Maria Mendiolo (sometimes credited as Maria Mendiola) and Mayte Mateus, it was written and produced by the German team of Frank Dostal (ex-lead singer of the Rattles) and Rolf Soja, backed by studio musicians. There was a UK Top 10 follow-up, ‘Sorry I’m A Lady’, but after this the group faded from view as they were unable to progress or change with the advent of new wave. Their particular brand of disco pop soon appeared jaded and dated. The original duo split up in 1983, but later returned with rival versions of Baccara, with Mendiolo partnering Marissa Perez in Baccara and Mateus partnering Jane Comerford and then Gina T. in New Baccara. Mendiolo’s version enjoyed the most success, releasing a string of club hits in the late 80s and early 90s.
