Biography
Formed in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, in 1971, this engaging progressive rock group was originally named Shacklock after founding guitarist Alan Shacklock. Janita Jenny Haan (vocals), Chris Holmes (keyboards and organ), Dave Punshon (piano), Dave Hewitt (bass) and Dick Powell (drums) completed the initial line-up, which took its new name from the legendary American baseball player. First Base, which included Wells Fargo, a popular stage favourite, enhanced the quintets growing reputation, much of which rested on Haans raw delivery. However, despite enjoying commercial success in the USA and Canada, where Amar Cabalero achieved a gold disc, the group was plagued by personnel problems. Ed Spevock (drums) and Steve Gurl (piano, ex-Wild Turkey) replaced Powell and Punshon, but the departure of Shacklock following the release of Babe Ruth proved pivotal.
