Decades: 1980s 2000s


Latter-day interest in Artery tends to stem from the presence of Simon Hinkler (later to join the Mission). However, the Sheffield band’s sound was an interesting blend of post-punk and funk, and worthy of attention in its own right. Hinkler was accompanied by Mark Gouldthorpe (vocals/guitar), Michael Fidler (vocals/guitar), Neil Mackenzie (bass) and Gary Wilson (drums), the team first appearing on ‘Mother Moon’ via the Limited Edition label in 1979. A move to Aardvark Records spawned two singles, ‘Unbalanced’ (with a free live EP) and ‘Afterwards’, before Artery signed to Red Flame Records. August 1982’s ‘The Clown’ hinted at the promise found on their debut mini-album, Oceans, and a further single, ‘The Slide’. It was then over a year before Artery offered their rendition of ‘Alabama Song’ (a co-release with Virgin Records), and they left Red Flame soon afterwards, signing to Golden Dawn...
