Formed in the USA in 1991 when singer Eric Bachmann met guitarist Eric Johnson on a bus in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Archers Of Loaf quickly distinguished themselves with a healthy disrespect for pomposity and grandeur in their decidedly lo-fi recordings. With the addition of fellow University of Carolina students Mark Price (drums) and Matt Gentling (bass), they recorded a debut single, ‘Wrong’, that earned them a contract with San Francisco label Alias. The Archers name itself was something of a giveaway, an impression of a band given to self-depreciation confirmed with the arrival of a single entitled ‘Toast’, which included the line: ‘She’s an indie rocker, and nothing’s gonna stop her’. This was housed on the band’s well-received 1993 debut album, Icky Mettle, a collection of obtuse musical ideas and defiant lyrical cheek.
