Biography

This hypnotic and ethereal, all-female string quartet, initially know as Aníma, comprises composition student Maria Huld Markan Sigfusdottir (29 September 1980, Reykjavík, Iceland; violin/guitar), Hildur Ársaelsdóttir (b. 31 January 1980, Copenhagen, Denmark; violin/guitar), Edda Rún Ólafsdóttir (b. 3 February 1978, Reykjavík, Iceland; viola) and Sólrún Sumarliòadóttir (b. 10 August 1977, Reykjavík, Iceland; cello/keyboards). They originally came together in 1997 at the Reykjavík College Of Music before going on to re-arrange material from Agaetis Byrjun in 1999, enabling Sigur Rós to tour what would become their breakthrough record.

To signify their increased focus on experimentation and the gradual eradication of traditional classical music from their repertoire, they renamed their act Amína in 2003. By 2004, sandwiched between...
