Amampondo was formed by Dizu Plaatjies (Zungula Plaatjies, 5 February 1957, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals), Lungiswa Theodora Plaatjies (b. 15 April 1973, Cape Town, South Africa; vocals), Simpiwe Matole (b. 29 May 1963, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals), Mizwandile Qotoyi (b. 22 November 1951, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals), Zandisile Leo Mbizela (b. 27 December 1961, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals), Mandla Theophlus Lande (b. 30 May 1962, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals), Michael Nkululeko Ludonga (b. 15 November 1962, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals) and Mantombi Matotiyana (b. 10 June 1960, Cape Town, South Africa; percussion/vocals).
