Three former members of the Action and Mighty Baby - Ian Whiteman (keyboards), Mike Evans (bass) and Roger Powell (drums) - formed the core of this studio-based act. If Man But Knew was a musically ambitious set, blending Eastern influenced chord progressions and time signatures with tracks of improvised rock. The three musicians had accepted the Muslim Sufi faith and many of the themes involved were based on traditional Sufi music. Whiteman, Evans and Powell later worked with many different artists, including Richard And Linda Thompson, Shirley Collins and Bridget St. John.
