The Brothers Johnson Biography

 This US hard-funk duo featured George Johnson (17 May 1953, Los Angeles, California, USA; guitar, vocals) and Louis Johnson (b. 13 April 1955, Los Angeles, California, USA; bass). They previously worked alongside their older brother Tommy and cousin Alex Weir in the band Johnson Three Plus One, backing the Supremes and Bobby Womack. George and Louis then went on to tour with Billy Preston and appeared on Quincy Jones’ 1975 US Top 20 album, Mellow Madness. The duo subsequently signed to A&M Records and worked with Jones on a series of excellent long-players for the label. These albums spawned three notable disco and US Top 10 hits with ‘I’ll Be Good To You’ (1976), Shuggie Otis’ ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ (1977), and ‘Stomp!’ (1980). A brief hiatus, involving the duo in studio production and session work, came to an end with the recording of 1988’s not altogether successful Kickin’.
