This band was basically assembled for a one-off recording project rather than for live performances. However, there have been occasions at festivals where the members have played sets. Initially organized in 1981, their first two albums featured Tony Rice (8 June 1951, Danville, Virginia, USA; guitar), J.D. Crowe (b. August 1937, Lexington, Kentucky, USA; banjo, vocals), Doyle Lawson (b. 20 April 1944, Fordtown, Tennessee, USA; mandolin, guitar, vocals), Bobby Hicks (fiddle) and Todd Phillips (bass, mandolin). The combination was then joined by Jerry Douglas (dobro), and for their 1989 album, Vasser Clements replaced Bobby Hicks and Mark Schatz played bass in lieu of Todd Phillips. In the 70s, Rice and Douglas had previously played with Crowe as members of the New South. The various members are all top bluegrass musicians in their own right and when not recording for this unit, they either front their own groups or play in various other bands. They have all also recorded with other combinations of musicians.
