Teddy Charles Biography
Theodore Charles Cohen, 13 April 1928, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, USA. After studying percussion at the New York Juilliard School of Music, Charles worked in a number of late-swing era big bands, including those led by Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. From the late 40s onwards he performed with numerous small groups, some of which were still dedicated to swing, but his interest lay in more progressive musical styles. Although he worked with many beboppers, Charles was attracted to the possibilities of extending the range of jazz through advanced composing techniques. Apart from experimenting with modality himself he encouraged others, such as George Russell, in similar areas. The complexities of such music made Charles appear inaccessible to many jazz fans and his reputation as a composer and arranger is valued more within the profession than with the general public. Conversely, his driving vibes playing has strong audience appeal even if he gives it rather less of his time. From the mid-50s onwards Charles became involved in record production, working with leading modern jazz artists such as Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane.
