Shai Biography
Comprising singers Carl Martin (29 August 1970), Marc Gay (b. 22 January 1969), Garfield A. Bright (b. 12 October 1969) and Darnell Van Rensalier (b. 17 May 1970), US R&B group Shai made a strong impact with their 1992 debut album, If I Ever Fall In Love. It peaked at number 3 in the Billboard R&B chart, and at number 6 in the pop chart, and included the hit singles "Comforter", "Baby I'm Yours' and the title track, which reached number 2 on the pop singles chart. Recorded in only six weeks, in retrospect it sounded a little rushed. In comparison, 1993"s Right Back At Cha, which featured remixes and alternative versions of songs from the debut, was a commercial disappointment. It sold less than a tenth of the copies that the debut had sold. The group's second album proper was not released until 1995. Blackface, recorded over nine months, was a mature, sophisticated collection of original R&B material, boasting evident refinement in the group's songwriting. As Bright accurately summarized, "It's more rhythm-oriented than our last album. The drum patterns are more funky and the hooks are more melodic, so it swings a little better."
