Pete Yorn Biography

27 July 1974, New Jersey, USA. This roots rock singer-songwriter and guitarist was one of the most unexpected commercial successes of the new millennium, breaking into the US charts in 2001 on the back of extensive live work and word-of-mouth sales. One of the most readily apparent influences on Yorn's music is Bruce Springsteen.

Yorn's first instrument was the drums, and it was not until he relocated to Los Angeles (after a stint at Syracuse University) that people began to recognize his songwriting talents. Honing his act by playing the west coast for four years, Yorn was eventually rewarded by a recording contract with Columbia Records. Before a proper studio album could be issued, a Hollywood producer happened to hear a few Yorn tracks, and included several on the soundtrack for the Farrelly Brothers' 2000 movie, Me, Myself & Irene. A few months later, Yorn's debut was released, 2001's Musicforthemorningafter, an album that saw Yorn play nearly all the instruments himself while several acclaimed producers were employed, including Brad Wood, Don Fleming, and R. Walt Vincent. Yorn enlisted a few old friends from his Syracuse days (guitarists Waz and Joe Kennedy) to lend a hand on the supporting tour.

The virtues of Yorn's trad rock material struck a chord with the American public, with Musicforthemorningafter going on to reach gold certification. In 2003, Yorn's highly anticipated follow-up, Day I Forgot, was released. Although a lesser work, the album was another success story reaching number 18 in the US album charts.
