Noah Lennox, Maryland, USA. One of the musicians in the New York-based experimental band Animal Collective, multi-instrumentalist Lennox has also released several solo albums under his Panda Bear moniker. His 1998 debut was completed with future Animal Collective bandmate Deakin (the two men had been making music together since meeting at high school in Baltimore County), and released on the latters Soccer Star label. The esoteric post-rock leanings of the material were reflected in the early Animal Collective releases, but it was Lennox who was instrumental in steering the band towards a more pop-orientated, harmony-rich sound. The influence of late 60s/early 70s era Beach Boys was apparent on Lennoxs second Panda Bear release, 2004s Young Prayer. Conceived in response to the death of his father, the album (which listed no song titles) was a beautifully realized recording based around simple acoustic guitar, piano and Lennoxs soulful vocals.
Lennox continued to work with Animal Collective following his move to Portugal with his young family. A series of solo single releases followed, the majority of which were compiled on 2007s Person Pitch. This highly acclaimed release was an out-and-out psychedelic pop album, with multi-tracked vocals, samples and loops wrapped around some gorgeous melodies. Lennox also plays with Scott Mou in Jane, releasing three experimental electronica albums in the early 00s.
