MercyMe Biography

This praise and worship band was formed in 1994 in Oklahoma City, USA, by Bart Millard (1972, Greenville, Texas, USA; vocals), James Bryson (b. 1968, Clinton, Missouri, USA; keyboards), and Michael Scheuchzer (b. 1975, Bartow, Florida, USA; guitar). After a series of local concerts, the trio relocated to Texas where they bolstered the band’s line-up with the addition of Robin Shaffer (b. 1975, Guthrie, Missouri, USA; drums, percussion) and Nathan Cochran (b. 1978, Columbia, Missouri, USA; bass). The quintet steadily built up a loyal following, travelling with Shepherd Ministries and providing worship music at student conferences. They recorded several independently released albums before achieving national status within the Christian community with 1999’s hit single, ‘I Can Only Imagine’. A recording contract with the nationally distributed INO Records followed. The major label releases Almost There (2001) and Spoken For (2002) stayed true to the band’s acoustic pop formula. In 2004, MercyMe reached the mainstream Top 100 with the single ‘Here With Me’, taken from the bestselling Undone.
