10 July 1939, Chicago, Illinois, USA. The exceptional lead voice of the Staple Singers began a simultaneous solo career when the group was signed to the Stax Records label in 1968. Here she began recording distinctly secular material including songs by Otis Redding (Good To Me, Security), Sam Cooke (You Send Me) and Joe Simon (The Chokin Kind). The singers gospel fervour enhanced such compositions, although her first R&B hit came with an original song, I Have Learned To Do Without You. This progress was waylaid in the wake of the Staple Singers own success with Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom) and her career was only resumed in 1977. A Piece Of The Action was a fine soundtrack collaboration with Curtis Mayfield, but later releases swamped her magnificent voice in disco and electro pop beat. In 1987 Staples was signed to Princes Paisley Park organization, the fruits of which appeared on Time Waits For No One, released two years later. Staples also made a guest appearance on Aretha Franklins gospel set, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. She made a cameo appearance in the Prince movie Graffiti Bridge and in 1991 featured on a R&B chart-topping remake of the Staples Singers hit Ill Take You There by BeBe And CeCe Winans. A second collaboration with Prince followed in 1993. Staples returned to her roots on a 1996 tribute to gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, recorded with blues guitarist Lucky Peterson. She was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1999 as a member of the Staples Singers. Another fine gospel recording saw the singer duetting with Bob Dylan on a version of Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003. Staples returned the following year with one of the finest albums of her career, Have A Little Faith. Source: The Encyclopedia of Popular Music by Colin Larkin. Licensed from Muze. |
