Idina Kim Mentzel, 30 May 1971, Queens, New York City, New York, USA. After studying at New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts, Menzel was in Rent (1996), which brought a Tony Award nomination. She then played in mainly off-Broadway productions before appearing as Elphaba in Wicked (2003), receiving a Tony Award for Best Performance By A Lead Actress In A Musical. In 2005, Menzel was again off-Broadway in See What I Wanna See and in the following year she appeared in the London production of Wicked. Menzel has played roles in several films, including Rent (2005), where she reprised her leading role from the stage show.
A strong and effective vocal style enhances Menzels dynamic stage presence. In a parallel career as a solo concert and recording artist, she writes many of the songs in her repertoire. She has made Original Cast albums of Rent (stage and film), The Wild Party, Wicked and See What I Wanna See, as well as an appearance on Ray Charles Genius & Friends. Menzel is married to Taye Diggs, her co-star in Rent, The Wild Party and Wicked.
