Elf Power Biography

This Athens, Georgia, USA-based lo-fi/indie quartet was originally formed by Andrew Rieger (vocals/guitar) and Laura Carter (keyboards/vocals) in 1994. The band has been compared to similarly styled outfits such as Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel over the years, and with good reason. Not only does Elf Power share the same record company (Elephant 6) with the aforementioned bands, but all three bands are friends and often guest on each others albums. Shortly after issuing their debut album in 1995, Vainly Clutching At Phantom Limbs, Elf Power made a fan out of Athens native and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe. With the addition of former associate Bryan Helium (Bryan Poole; bass/vocals) and Andrew Wegelin (percussion), they opened several dates on a R.E.M. tour. Further releases soon followed, including 1997s When The Red King Comes and 2000s The Winter Is Coming. The follow-up, Creatures, was recorded without original bass player Poole who left to work on his own solo project the Late B.P. Helium.
