Edie Adams Biography

Elizabeth Edith Enke, 16 April 1927, Kingston, Pennsylvania, USA. Adams trained at Juilliard School of Music and Columbia School of Drama. She became Miss US Television in 1950, made commercials and appeared on Ernie In Kovacsland and The Ernie Kovacs Show. On Broadway, she was in Wonderful Town(1953) and played Daisy Mae in Li'l Abner(1957), for which she won a Tony Award as Best Featured Actress In A Musical. Also in 1957, she was in a television production of Cinderella. As an actress she was sometimes credited as Edith Adams.

In 1954, Adams had married comedian Kovacs and after his fatal 1962 car crash she inherited a $500,000 tax debt. Eventually paying off the debt, she then secured the rights to Kovacs' shows, saving many from destruction. She had her own television show, Here's Edie (1963), and over the decades appeared in television series including McMillan & Wife (1972), Harry O (1976), The Love Boat (1978), Mrs. Columbo (1979), Murder, She Wrote (1985), Tales Of The City (1993), and many movies. Throughout her career she also performed cabaret in hotels and casinos. In 1972 Adams married jazz musician Pete Candoli, with whom she worked in duo in the 70s.
