Dorothy Shay Biography

Dorothy Sims, 12 April 1921, Jacksonville, Florida, USA, d. 22 October 1978, Santa Monica, California, USA. A popular country-style comedienne, Shay began her music career in 1945 as a blues singer with the Morton Gould Orchestra. A few years later, she changed her musical style and became known as the Park Avenue Hillbillie and regularly joined Spike Jones on his radio series. She appeared in the 1951 movie Comin' 'Round The Mountain and later made appearances on The Waltons television series. She recorded for Columbia Records and is perhaps best remembered for her 1947 recording of "Feudin' And Fightin" (from the Broadway musical Laffing Room Only), which became a number 4 hit in both the country and pop charts. She died in 1978 following a heart attack.
